Frankfurt city centre and Frankfurt Airport are both around 20 minutes away by train and car. Darmstadt is somewhere to keep an eye on

Darmstadt has a population of over 160,000 and is a centre of research, education, art and culture. Since 1997 it has had the additional official designation “Wissenschaftsstadt” (City of Science). The city is home to a technical university, several colleges and almost 50,000 students. There are 30 research institutes including the ESA’s European space flight control centre and the Fraunhofer Society, companies in the ITC, chemicals and pharmaceuticals sectors plus the DAX-listed group Merck. Both Plexiglas and the first enzyme-based detergent were invented in Darmstadt. Liquid crystals for mobile phones and laptops were first tested here, as was the German internet.

The attractiveness of the city as a place of work is evidenced by the workforce of 138,000, of which around 70,000 are inbound commuters. Darmstadt took first place in the ranking of the most future-orientated cities in the years 2015 to 2019.

It owes its reputation as the centre of the Art Nouveau movement to Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig and the artists’ community he set up on the Mathildenhöhe in 1899, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021.

In addition to the city’s function as a centre of science, it is possible to live well and enjoy life here at the foot of the Odenwald mountains. The city centre is a shopping magnet for the surrounding area, which is emphasised by the retail centrality index score of 106.8 (Germany = 100).

Frankfurt Airport offers non-stop passenger flights to 303 destinations in 95 countries worldwide.
